Bank-e-Millie Afghan (BMA) holds the distinction of being Afghanistan’s first financial institution, founded in 1933. It was also the country’s pioneering public-private partnership in banking, with 72% of its shares initially owned by the private sector. As the first formal bank, BMA played a critical role in introducing structured banking services to both the citizens and the government of Afghanistan. Its longstanding reputation is rooted in a robust capital foundation and a legacy of reliability.
In 1976, ownership of the bank was fully transferred to the Government of Afghanistan through nationalization. Since then, BMA has remained at the forefront of delivering secure and modern banking solutions. The safety of customer deposits continues to be its primary commitment. Beyond traditional banking, BMA significantly contributes to national economic sectors such as industry, agriculture, services, and global trade. The bank operates with a strong emphasis on corporate governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance to uphold its reputation. Today, BMA maintains a strong physical presence with 19 branches in Kabul, 23 branches across various provinces, and has equity interests in the United States and the United Kingdom.
